USFWS Announces Grants to Support Habitat Acquisition and Conservation Planning for Endangered Species
The grants, awarded through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund, include a Habitat Conservation Planning Assistance Grant for the South Puget Sound Prairie HCP (Thurston County) $450,000.

Protecting Puget Sound marine and shoreline habitat through improved permitting and compliance with development regulations
Deadline: September 26, 2011
Eligible entities: State, local, or Tribal government agencies, nonprofit conservation organizations, and institutions of higher learning, operating within the Puget Sound region. Successful proposals will help local governments and others implement, monitor compliance with, and enforce existing regulations that protect marine and nearshore ecosystems from the pressures of development.
Notice of Funding Availability—USFWS (Washington State)
The restoration programs of the USFWS in Washington state are soliciting projects to implement in FY 2012. Deadline for
project summaries for National Fish Passage Program and Western Native Trout Initiative: September 12, 2011. Deadline for Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, Puget Sound Coastal Program, or Chehalis Fisheries Restoration Program: October 14, 2011.
Recreation and Conservation Office changes grant schedule
Starting in 2012, RCO will accept applications for grants administered by the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board only in even-numbered years. Eight grant programs are affected, including ALEA, WWRP and LWCF.

WDFW “Living with Wildlife” features the importance of snags to birds and other wildlife
West of the Cascade Mountains, 39 species of birds and 14 species of mammals depend on tree cavities for their survival. This webpage includes instructions for creating and maintaining snags as habitat.
NPR features efforts to reverse decline of streaked horned lark
