Pacific Coast Joint Venture partners receive funding under NAWCA U.S. Small Grants program

2009-2010 Federal and Junior Duck Stamps now available
Ninety-eight cents of every dollar used to purchase Duck Stamps goes directly to buying or leasing wetland habitat for wildlife. Since 1934, Federal Duck Stamp sales have raised more than $700 million to acquire and protect more than 5.2 million acres of wetlands, including habitat on hundreds of the 548 national wildlife refuges spread across all 50 states and U.S. territories. A current Duck Stamp is also good for free admission to any refuge open to the public.

Obama administration launches Serve.gov
Serve.gov is an online resource for registering and finding volunteer opportunities. Joint Venture partners may find this a useful resource for recruiting volunteers for monitoring, restoration, and other activities.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology seeks volunteers to catalog NestCam images
Since 1999, the Cornell Lab has archived more than eight million images from NestCams located around the country. To help sort through the images, they’ve developed CamClickr—an online tool for volunteers to view the images and sort them into albums, then tag each image by type of behavior.

The Sea Duck Joint Venture seeks proposals for projects and studies that advance our understanding of sea duck biology, ecology, and status. Up to $162,000 is available for new projects in FY10.

Recovery Act: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program
Deadline: September 30, 2009
Provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners to restore, enhance, and manage fish and wildlife habitats on their own lands. Interested parties must contact their local coordinator for information about funding and technical assistance availability. Practitioner's Toolkit for Marine Conservation Agreements
This online resource dedicated to protecting ocean and coastal biodiversity is provided by The Nature Conservancy’s Global Marine Initiative. Significant new features, include a downloadable Field Guide that walks practitioners through a four phase process to create marine conservation agreements, field project case studies, U.S. state agency contact directory, an expanded MCA-related publications and presentations section, and more.

Interim Technical Report—Fish and Wildlife Technology Findings from projects of the NRCS Agricultural Wildlife Conservation Center
January 2009
Technology development projects were undertaken to develop the best information possible on fish and wildlife habitat needs on private lands and transfer that information to NRCS field offices and others in an easy-to-use form for working with private landowners in comprehensive conservation planning. Bird and biodiversity tools and resources

The eBird Reference Dataset
This dataset contains count data for bird species submitted by volunteers to eBird, a citizen-science project run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. The data is intended to be a useful resource for studying avian dynamics and for developing new ecological modeling techniques.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website introduces new “browse” feature
The "taxonomic browse" feature lets you see thumbnail images of all the birds in any taxonomic group you pick--and hear their sounds, all on the same page. Includes links to identification and life history.

Xeno-canto—new tool for birders and bird conservation
Xeno-canto is a platform for birders, biologists and conservationists to share knowledge and recordings of the world’s birds. Visitors can search through sounds in many different ways, make maps showing locations of recordings, and use simple song characteristics to identify unknown songs heard in the field.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species Bulletin--Spring 2009 Edition
The articles in this edition spotlight the progress the Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners have achieved in conserving and recovering imperiled animals and plants since passage of the Endangered Species Act 35 years ago.

Data tools and resources

USDA PLANTS Database: Advanced Search Becomes More User-Friendly
Users can now access all of the PLANTS data with the Advanced Search link located at the top of the left navigation box on the PLANTS home page. There is a new yellow button located at the bottom of Parts A and B on the Advanced Search entitled, "Review Selections and Sort Report." After you have made selections, you can hit that button and get a user-friendly view of what you have selected and another chance to select a sort preference. Also, if you hit the "Display Results" button and the result doesn't appear to give you what you wanted, there is a "Review Selections or Sort Report" link at the top of the result page that lets you go back and easily review what you did to assist in revising your query. NOAA Coastal Services Center launches Climate Change Adaptation web site
Users can post, learn, and interact with other coastal managers about climate change adaptation. Topic areas include tools, impacts, guidebooks, risk and vulnerability assessments, forums, and more.

Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States
This report summarizes the science of climate change and the impacts of climate change on the United States, now and in the future. It is largely based on results of the U.S. Global Change Research Program and integrates those results with related research from around the world...
